Searches for Quasars at z> 5

چکیده
Quasars continue to be the most luminous objects known in the universe but no longer have the largest redshifts. I review current techniques for finding quasars at z > 5 and the status of current optical surveys. I compare the spectra of known quasars with z ≈ 5 with the spectra of some recently discovered galaxies with z > 5 to see what we may expect in the future from surveys for high redshift quasars and galaxies. The prominent emission lines of quasars should make them easier to detect and confirm spectroscopically than the z > 5 galaxies discovered so far.

Discovery of a Clustered Quasar Pair at Z ≈ 5: Biased Peaks in Early Structure Formation
We report a discovery of a quasar at z = 4.96 ± 0.03 within a few Mpc of the quasar SDSS 0338+0021 at z = 5.02 ± 0.02. The newly found quasar has the SDSS i and z magnitudes of ≈ 21.2, and an estimated absolute magnitude MB ≈ −25.2. The projected separation on the sky is 196 arcsec, and the redshift difference ∆z = 0.063±0.008. The probability of finding this quasar pair by chance in the absenc...
متن کاملThe cluster environments of radio - loud quasars at 0 . 6 < z < 1 . 1
We have carried out multicolour imaging of a complete sample of radio-loud quasars at 0.6 < z < 1.1 and find groups or clusters of galaxies in the fields of at least 8 and possibly 13 of the 21 sources. There is no evidence for an evolution in the richness of the environments of radio-loud quasars from other low-redshift studies to z & 0.9. The quasars associated with groups and clusters in our...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Quasars at High Redshift and Their Connection with Galaxies
I review recent observations on the evolution of quasars, describe new surveys for quasars at z > 5 and for quasars with z > 3.3 down to luminosities corresponding to L* galaxies, and note the possible connection between the evolution of the star formation rate in young galaxies and the evolution of quasars.
متن کاملFour Quasars above Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey
The Canada-France High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS) is an optical survey designed to locate quasars during the epoch of reionization. In this paper we present the discovery of the first four CFHQS quasars at redshift greater than 6, including the most distant known quasar, CFHQS J2329-0301 at z = 6.43. We describe the observational method used to identify the quasars and present optical, infrared, a...
متن کاملA simple model to link the properties of quasars to the properties of dark matter halos out to high redshift
We present a simple model of how quasars occupy dark matter halos from z = 0 to z = 5 using the observed mBH −σ relation and quasar luminosity functions. This provides a way for observers to statistically infer host halo masses for quasar observations using luminosity and redshift alone. Our model is deliberately simple and sidesteps any need to explicitly describe the physics. In spite of its ...
